Did You Know - Triggerfish get their name from the unique “trigger” spine on their dorsal fin, which they can lock upright for defense and then release with a hidden second spine. Known for their tough skin and powerful jaws, they can crush crabs, clams, and other shellfish with ease. These colorful, diamond-shaped fish are also highly territorial, often guarding their nests aggressively against much larger intruders. While they’re most abundant in warmer waters, they sometimes wander up to Massachusetts in late summer when the ocean is warmest, making their appearance here a seasonal surprise.
